A Letter to Class of 2026 Freshmen from Loyola Varsity Basketball Coach Damaine Powell
Congratulations and welcome to Loyola High School. My name is Damaine Powell, I am a former Division I point guard and assistant coach at the University of Southern California now entering my second year as head coach of the Varsity Basketball team here at Loyola. The 2022-23 season will mark my 25th year as a head coach, to go along with 16 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level. I am thrilled to be welcoming you and your family into our program!
This past winter, our Cubs were CIF Southern Section Division I Quarterfinalists with a 22-7 overall record. We welcome back a number of returning players this season and look forward to adding more to the brotherhood when you arrive on campus this fall. Before that, however, we are inviting all incoming freshmen to our summer workouts that will take place on the following Mondays here on campus: June 20th, June 27th and July 11th. These will take place inside Leavey Gymnasium from 10 a.m. to noon. We ask that you wear basketball shoes, shorts and a t-shirt with your last name written/taped on the back. We will work on fundamentals and provide time for scrimmaging.
If you are interested in playing basketball at Loyola during the upcoming school year, we encourage you to attend. However, please note that these are not tryouts, nor are they mandatory. Attendance will in no way impact your ability to make the team this winter. These on-campus workouts provide you with an opportunity to familiarize yourself with our gym, coaching staff, and your future classmates. I also run basketball camps over the spring break, Christmas break, and the summer. If you are interested in more information, please email me at dpowell@loyolahs.edu.
Thank you for your interest in the Loyola Basketball program and we hope to see you this summer!
