The Cubs began their San Diego trip with a tough match against the Torrey Pines High School Falcons.
With the absence of two key defenders, Kenechi Ekeomodi ‘21 and Drew Rozelle ‘21, Loyola’s starting defense was lead by Nick Lopez ‘21, Tomás Griego ‘20, and, typically at midfield, Michael Maloney ‘20. Heading into the match, plays on both end of the pitch escalated quickly. Senior Will Valentine made way on a breakaway but a chipped shot flew just inches above the Falcons’ crossbar. Loyola’s offense kept on the pressure and fast pace but found some trouble when connecting with deep balls downfield. And in the final third of the first half, small errors became crucial. The Falcons gained a late opportunity putting in a goal in the bottom left corner (1-0 Torrey Pines).
After a quick half time talk, the Cubs returned ready to dominate. In the match’s final minute, seniors Grayson Doody and Liam Hook lead a fast pace attack, and after two missed opportunities, junior Spencer Roberts headed in a ball placed by Hook. (1-1).
As the season reaches its halfway mark, games against opponents like Torrey Pines or Servite are essential for the Cubs. On Saturday Loyola will complete their San Diego trip with a match against St. Augustine High School.
