Yesterday, January 18th, Loyola’s varsity soccer team continued their winning streak, beating Crespi 2-0.
The Cubs, dominating at the start of the first half, created a lot of opportunities to score. Junior forward Eric Arreola made the first goal of the game at 23:00. Arreola headbutted a cross off into to the top left corner of the goal.
By the end of the first half, Crespi began playing more aggressively and increased their possession, but the Cubs’ impressive defense stopped them from scoring.
Head Coach Chris Walter ‘93 said, “We played very well defensively and because of that they didn't take many shots. We also focused on trying to control the game and stay on the attack. So it was a good combo of defense and offense.”
The Cubs ended the first half in the lead, 1-0. They began the second half playing stronger offense.
Sophomore forward Spencer Roberts received a pass and made a flat kick into the center of the goal from the right side 10 minutes into the second half.
Roberts said, “We were constantly attacking and eventually a team mate sent me the ball. I saw a nice cross and the center back wasn't really paying attention to where the ball was, so I took advantage of that and kicked the ball in the goal. I didn't really know if it went in or not because my head hit the ground. I'm glad that I was able to put one away and lift the team.”
After the second goal, Crespi attempted to rebound by playing more offensively. Tensions ran high at around 14:00 when Crespi made a cross kick, but the goalie was able to catch the ball before any Crespi player got hold of the ball.
The Cubs closed the game strong Friday night, but the Cubs did not have their best performance according to Walter.
“I would like to see the team play a little more consistently and control more of the game, but it's always tough to play at Crespi and we got a win so we're happy with it. We need to do a better job holding the ball and keeping it in the midfield,” said Walter.
On Monday, January 21st, the Cubs will play Alemany for the first time this season on Smith Field at 5:00 p.m.
Smith-Hastie said, “It's going to be a tough game since we’re facing a team that we haven't played yet. A lot of the teams in our league play well so it’s always a challenge. But, we’re going into Monday’s game with three wins three weekends in a row, so we’re feeling confident.”
