LAST TIME OUT: It was a slow first half for the Cubs in their first round match against the 9-1 Norte Vista Braves, but Loyola (6-5) hunkered down in the second and shut out the visitors at Smith Field while running away with the 35-7 victory. It was Loyola’s fifth-straight victory and their third-straight game holding the opponent to 7 points or less.
PREVIEW: Top-seeded Loyola will be on the road for the first time in the playoffs, traveling down to north Orange County to take on the No. 8 seed Mustangs of Yorba Linda. A victory on Friday sends the Cubs into their second-straight CIF Semifinal against the winner of Santa Barbara (9-2) and Corona del Mar (6-5). Should Santa Barbara win, that Final Four game would be hosted by Loyola; otherwise, the Cubs will be on the road at Corona del Mar as determined via CIF coin flip.
CIF PLAYOFFS: Four-time consecutive Angelus League champion Loyola is the lone remaining league team left in the playoffs, as all three other familiar foes lost in the first round last Friday. St. Francis was eliminated early after a 38-17 loss to San Juan Hills, while St. Paul (L 35-41 vs Santa Barbara) and Paraclete (L 21-40 at Corona Del Mar) also fell in their opening matchups. The top half of the CIF bracket has Loyola at Yorba Linda, and Santa Barbara hosting Corona del Mar. Rounding out the bottom half of the bracket is La Serna at Trabuco Hills, and Capistrano Valley at Culver City.
