LAST TIME OUT: Loyola claimed its fourth-straight league championship with a 27-6 rout over rival Cathedral last Friday in Downtown LA, led by outstanding nights from the Cub defense and special teams. Touchdowns came from QB Thomas Knyal ’25 to TE Carson Real ’24, LB Scott Taylor ’25, a punt return score from DB Brandon Lockhart ’26, and a pair of FGs (40yd/21 yd; 3/3 PATs). The win marked the fourth in a row for the Cubs (5-5 overall), who improved to 4-1 in Angelus League play and secured their automatic berth into the 2023 CIF-SS Playoffs.
PREVIEW: Loyola will take the No. 1 seed into this Friday’s first round matchup with River Valley League champion Norte Vista (9-1) of Riverside. A win would push Loyola into the CIF Quarterfinals next Friday (Nov. 10) against the first round game victor between [8] Yorba Linda (7-3) and [9] Moorpark (9-1). That quarterfinal game will be away for the Cubs.
CIF PLAYOFFS: Familiar opponents in the Div. IV bracket with Loyola are Angelus League foes [4] St. Paul, [12] Paraclete, and [15] Culver City. The Cubs defeated all three teams in 2023 (Week 7, W 25-11 vs St. Paul; Week 9, W 36-7 vs Paraclete; Week 2, W 24-6 vs Culver City). Rounding out the Top 4 seeds in the bracket are [2] La Serna, [3] Ayala, and [4] Corona Del Mar.
UNDERCLASSMEN: Both of Loyola’s Frosh-only and Soph-only teams concluded the 2023 season last Friday. The Frosh finished 7-5 overall, while the Sophomores had wins in four of their last five games and went undefeated in Angelus League play to win the league title.
