Even when facing multiple injuries, sickness, and harsh weather conditions Loyola couldn’t be stopped.
In their Mission League season opener against Crespi the Cubs commanded the pitch. Twenty minutes into the first half Kenechi Ekeomodi finds senior Grayson Doody with a pass from midfield. Doody outruns two Crespi defenders and lays in a shot in the bottom right corner (1-0). Three minutes later Doody creates another opportunity but his shot is blocked well by Crespi’s keeper. Junior Nate Smith-Hastie shifts direction to get to the deflection and drills in the ball making the score 2-0. And with only about ten minutes left in the first half the Cubs utilize a corner kick opportunity. Brought in well by senior Eric Arreola, sophomore Alejandro Sanchez makes contact with the ball and places it in the back of the net (3-0).
Throughout the second half Loyola expanded upon their offensive success. Coming in at high speed to a one-on-one battle with the keeper, Nate Smith-Hastie makes a quick move and chips the ball right above the goalie’s head (4-0). Nick Ramsbottom strikes a nice ball from far out but Crespi’s keeper is able to make the stop. With 18 minutes to go senior Will Valentine dribbles through Crespi defense but gets fouled in the box. Given the PK Valentine bangs one in making it 5-0. And right when it looks like the match is at its end Valentine goes for another, smashing the ball in the bottom right corner (6-0)
It's without a doubt Loyola’s offensive depth will pose a threat to opponents in the Mission League. Even when missing starting midfielder Liam Hook and forward Jake Rogers, the Cubs can use their versatile roster to create strong offensive moments.
