Coming off a strong 3-1 win against Santa Margarita, the Cubs took on Los Alamitos Thursday evening in the Adidas West-coast Showcase Tournament. Loyola dominated possession in the first half putting two shots on net but struggled to finish well-played opportunists. Outside backs Kenechi Ekomodi and Nick Ramsbottom were versatile to the team defending with confidence and also when taking the ball upfield. And despite the absence of junior Spencer Roberts (injured) Loyola’s forwards Michael Maloney, Ben Bolte, Grayson Doody, and Nate Smith-Hastie placed good pressure on Los Alamitios’ defenders.
Entering the second half, strong performances by Kenechi Ekeomodi and Loyola’s front three paid off. Minutes after subbing in, #24 Jake Rogers stole the ball from a Los Alamitos’ back and finished nicely with a goal in the upper right corner making the score 1-0. Loyola's corner game was on point and the Cubs were able to secure another opportunity with a connection between Kenechi Ekeomodi and Michael Maloney. Senior Michael Maloney took control in Los Alamitos’ box and scored off a header, 2-0 Cubs. The Cubs were victorious in the 2 nil win over Los Alamitos and finished with 8 shots on net.
If the Cubs continue to utilize a fast pace offense and take better advantage of scoring opportunities, they should be able to find success in the West Coast Showcase Tournament.
