Loyola sophomore kicker Mark Hyan hit the game-winning field goal with just 0:07 left on the clock to lift the Cubs to a 6-3 victory over rival St. Francis on Friday evening (Oct. 22) in La Cañada.
Neither team had much going offensively as all six points on the night for Loyola came off the boot of Hyan (2 FGs), while St. Francis' lone points also came on a field goal early in the first quarter. The Cub defense held strong throughout the duration of the game, not allowing any big plays and forcing the home team to field goal attempts. The game-winning FG in Loyola's final possession in the fourth quarter was just the first lead of the game for the Cubs.
With the victory, Loyola improves to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the Angelus League, officially clinching at least a share of the league title. The Cubs have a chance to win it outright next Friday (Oct. 29) on Senior Night against St. Paul at Smith Field.
