Loyola Varsity Soccer kicked off the 2019-2020 season with a scrimmage against the Palos Verdes Sea Kings. As the Cubs went into Sea King territory and played at their home field, that did not stop Loyola from starting off hot. With an early goal from senior and two time varsity member, Michael Maloney, with an assist by UCLA commit and three time varsity member, Grayson Doody, this gave the Cubs great momentum early on. Carrying that momentum throughout the game, another early goal was scored in the 23rd minute by junior, Jake Rodgers, with an assist from Michael Maloney. Two minutes later, another goal was scored by Jake, which was assisted by sophomore, Alejandro Sanchez, number 22. Rodgers was hot in the first half, completing a hat trick and grabbing his third goal in the 36th minute, which Malcolm Hawkins assisted with a nice through ball. Playing with great effort and a determination to win, Loyola finished the first half with a score of 4-0.
The second half was more mellowed out, but great soccer was still being played. Loyola allowed a goal early on in the second half, but that was the only goal Palos Verdes was able to score. Both teams showed great chemistry, and as the second half came to an end, the Cubs grabbed their first victory of the season, beating the Sea Knights 4-1.
