Four of Loyola's Varsity teams have made their way into this week's CIF-SS Division I Top 10 polls, with Volleyball and Lacrosse coming in at No. 1 overall, Soccer at No. 4 and Tennis receiving votes. Rankings were determined by the CIF-SS Sport Advisory Committees for the week of April 26.
VOLLEYBALL: Coming off a spirited 3-1 victory over South Bay rival and previously top-ranked and undefeated Mira Costa last Saturday, Loyola Volleyball now overtakes the Mustangs and lands at No. 1 in this week's CIF-SS poll. The Cubs and head coach Michael Boehle '84, sporting a 7-0 overall record, travel down to Newport Harbor HS to take on the No. 4-ranked Sailors on Thursday (Apr. 29) at 4:30PM. Then, Round No. 2 against Mira Costa will be held in Manhattan Beach on Saturday (May 1) at 1PM. That game will be made available to stream (with a subscription) by the NFHS Network here.
LACROSSE: It's the second-straight week atop the Division I poll for Loyola Lacrosse. The Cubs and head coach Jimmy Borell are currently 7-1 overall (2-0 in Mission League) and ride a six-game winning streak into this afternoon's match with Crespi at Smith Field. The jump from their previous No. 5 ranking to No. 1 came after two quality wins against Orange County powerhouses Mater Dei (Apr. 15; OT 9-8 at home) and Foothill (Apr. 17; 7-5 at Foothill). Since then, the Cubs have recorded road victories at Harvard-Westlake (Apr. 20; 11-5) and at Mira Costa (Apr. 22; 16-3) and most recently defeated Notre Dame by a score of 23-1 at home last Saturday.
SOCCER: Head coach Chris Walter '93 and Loyola Soccer hold steady at No. 4 in this week's CIF-SS poll after another week of shutouts. The Cubs recorded a pair of Mission League victories at Harvard-Westlake (Apr. 19; 2-0) and against Chaminade (Apr. 21; 7-0), and are coming off a 3-0 victory yesterday (Apr. 26) at St. Francis. It was their 9th straight victory to go to 9-0 in league. Loyola has yet to concede a goal in Mission League play, outscoring opponents now by a 33-0 margin. The Cubs will look to make it 10 straight wins when they visit Crespi tomorrow (Apr. 28).
TENNIS: Coach Brian Held '93 and Loyola Tennis are on a solid streak of their own, winning their last 7 matches (five of them on the road). The 8-3 Cubs (5-0 Mission League) are now receiving votes in this week's CIF-SS poll. Perhaps their biggest win of the season to this point came on April 15th, when the Cubs took down league favorite and the current No. 2 ranked team in Division I, Harvard-Westlake, by a 10-8 score in Studio City. It was the first league loss for the Wolverines in more than two decades. Mission League play continues today (Apr. 27) at Chaminade at 1PM.
