Loyola’s Varsity Tennis team concluded a successful 2019 campaign in early May, with the Cubs wrapping up their season with a 12-6 record overall.
Under the leadership of 11th year head coach Brian Held ’93, Loyola earned a 26th consecutive bid into the CIF postseason after finishing as runner-up in the Mission League. The Cubs dropped just two league contests and earned a spot into the CIF-SS Ford Division I Playoffs, where they defeated Yorba Linda HS on the road in the CIF First Round back on May 1 by a score of 11-7. Loyola put up a fight in their CIF Second Round matchup against San Marino HS, but fell by a similar 11-7 score at Cheviot Hills Tennis Center on May 3. Two Cubs later moved on to the CIF Individual tournament, with senior Dillon Kneafsey ’19 and junior Chris McFerson ’20 representing Loyola at Whittier Downs.
Coach Held will return 11 letter winners from this underclassman-heavy Varsity team, losing just Kneafsey and Tommy Hays ’19 to graduation. Coming back next year will be four rising seniors (Matt Knight '20, Sean Martini '20, McFerson, Hayden Soule '20), four rising juniors (Owen Hooper '21, Ethan Lopez '21, Jackson Treiger '21, Luke Turrill '21) and three rising sophomores (Joe Knoll '22, Jonathan Lee '22, Victor Shammas '22).
