JULY 8, 2022 - It's a homecoming at Hernandez Field for Loyola alum Keith Ramsey '98 as the former All-CIF honoree, CIF Champion, and MLB professional has been selected to lead the Loyola Baseball program as its new head coach.
Ramsey, one of the most highly regarded coaches in Southern California, returns to his alma mater after head coaching stints at Crossroads (Santa Monica) and most recently Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach).
“We are very fortunate to have [Coach Ramsey] lead Loyola’s baseball program," said Athletic Director Chris O’Donnell ’88. “His record at Mira Costa speaks for itself, winning the Bay League title five out of six years and elevating the program from Division III to Division I. Not only does he bring his high school coaching experience to our program, but he also brings the skillset from playing over 10 years of professional baseball."
Ramsey graduated from Loyola in 1998 and later starred at the University of Florida, where he earned All-SEC accolades as a left-handed pitcher and outfielder. He was selected in the 10th Round of the 2002 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians and played professionally for 11 years, reaching AAA. Additionally, he played winter ball in the Dominican Republic, Taiwan and Italy.
As a student-athlete for the Cubs, Ramsey was an All-CIF selection and Team MVP and was also the starting goalkeeper on Loyola Soccer's 1998 CIF Division I Championship team.
He inherits a new 2022-23 squad fresh off of a CIF Division IV Quarterfinal appearance this past spring.
“I couldn’t think of a better opportunity than to be back home at Loyola and be able to impact these young men. It’s important for our athletes to believe there is something special in them and to believe in the power of we,” said Ramsey.
“The biggest thing I’d like to bring to the program is a baseball community that plays for each other and has the right experience we want for our young men. Coach Buller did a great job this year and had a terrific season. I want to build on the program to where we’re competing for CIF Division I titles at some point and help build one of the nicest baseball facilities in Southern California.”
