The Cubs were defeated by a tough Notre Dame team on Thursday, October 17th with a final score of 10 to 0. Loyola came into the game fresh off a recent victory against Serra which ended their previous two-game losing streak.
The team hoped to continue their success against Notre Dame. Before the game, sophomore quarterback Jack Wynperle spoke about their team strengths. Wynperle said, “In the last few games, our defense has been our best unit. This week, I hope the offense is able to get going and is able to get on the scoreboard early and often.”
Unfortunately for the Cubs, this did not come true. Much to their frustration, they could not get on the scoreboard for the entire game, and they got shut out for the first time all year. However, the Cubs did have a few bright plays.
A highlight moment of the game for Loyola came right before halftime. With 46 seconds left in the game, the Loyola defense forced and recovered a fumble. After this turnover, the offense put a solid drive together. Wynperle found sophomore Alec Sanchez on a deep route to the two yard line; however, time ran out and the Cubs could not put points on the board.
Another thing that impressed was the solid play by the linebacker group of the Cubs. Sophomores Patrick Sodl and Jack Shoemaker made a huge impact all game; they both racked up a ton of tackles and sacks. Patrick and Jack have been big stars on the team all season long.
Shoemaker stated, “One thing that has helped me thrive this season is our team’s balance between having fun and working hard. Both of these things are crucial to a team, and finding a way to maintain both traits is extremely important.”
Looking forward, the Cubs will end their season against Chaminade and Bishop Amat. They have high very high hopes that the team will get back on track.
Sodl said, “If we continue to learn and work together as a unit, I believe that we have what it takes to put together a successful end to our season; we might even make it to the Mission League Championship.”
