Loyola Athletics is pleased to welcome Jimmy Borell—a former collegiate lacrosse standout, professional athlete and U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section Coach of the Year—as the newest head coach of the Loyola Varsity Lacrosse program.
Borell, who hails from Fairfax, Virginia, has spent the last ten years coaching college, high school and club lacrosse throughout Southern California. He was the head coach at Marymount California University from 2017-18 and most recently served as head coach of the successful Palos Verdes HS boys lacrosse program for the last nine seasons, leading the Sea Kings to an impressive nine Bay League conference titles (including seven in a row from 2012-18) and three U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section - Northern Division (LA City) titles in 2012, 2014 and 2015. In 2014, Borell was named LA Area Coach of the Year by U.S. Lacrosse and has three more Bay League Coach of the Year awards to his name. He currently serves as Director and Coach of the Los Angeles Heat and Factory Lacrosse organizations.
As a player, Borell was a team captain and three-year starting midfielder at the University of Maryland. He would later be drafted upon graduation and went on to compete professionally in both the National Lacrosse League (NLL – Philadelphia Wings; Colorado Mammoth; San Jose Stealth) and Major League Lacrosse (MLL – Los Angeles Riptide; Ohio Machine; Denver Outlaws) for six years.
Borell is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist who received his B.S. in kinesiology from the University of Maryland in 2007 and his M.A. in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine in 2017. In the fall, he will lead a Cub Lacrosse program that returns 22 letterwinners from last year’s roster. Join us in welcoming Coach Borell to the Loyola Family! #AMDG
