PREVIEW: Head coach Jimmy Borell and the Cubs will begin their 2023 campaign ranked No. 5 in the CIF Southern Section Division I Preseason polls. This year's schedule is as tough as it gets, with Top 15-ranked opponents littered up and down the Cubs' slate, including out-of-state/area competition like Arizona's own Brophy Prep. The Broncos and Cubs met last year in Phoenix, with the home team winning 15-13.
Loyola made history as the first-ever CIF-SS Division I Boys Lacrosse champions in 2021 when lacrosse became an official CIF-sanctioned sport. Last season, Loyola made it to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs before bowing out to eventual champion Corona del Mar and finishing the season 15-7 overall and as undefeated Mission League champions.
This year, the Cubs will be led by a quintet of captains: seniors Trent Turner '23, Luc Dumont '23, Santi Goldthwait '23, and juniors Luke Stickler '24 and Ben Horowitz '24. Borell enters his 4th season at the helm of the Loyola Lacrosse program.
HOME SCHEDULE/UP NEXT: Next week (Sat, Feb. 25), Loyola Varsity and JV host Mater Dei at Smith Field. The Frosh/Soph squad will play their first game of the season on Thursday (Feb. 23) at home against St. Francis. Each of those games will be livestreamed.
