PREVIEW: In a battle between the Top 2 ranked teams in the nation, Loyola (23-3 overall) will look for redemption on Saturday against the Sailors, who took a tight 3-2 decision (25-15, 20-25, 25-20, 19-25, 12-15) over the Cubs in last weekend’s CIF-SS Div. I Finals matchup. It will be the third time that Loyola and Newport Harbor will face off this season, with the Cubs taking the first meeting at Newport on March 12 (3-1). The rubber match will be the final game of the 2022 season for CIF Boys Volleyball.
LAST TIME OUT: On Thursday, Loyola defeated No. 3 seed Cathedral Catholic, 3-1 (15-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-21) in what was their final home game this season. (The Cubs finished the year undefeated at Leavey Gymnasium.) After a slow start in that regional semifinal match, the Cubs found their momentum in the second set and rode it to a four-set victory. On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 seed Newport Harbor battled with No. 4 Beckman (Irvine) to a 3-1 decision (25-21, 26-24, 21-25, 25-21) to set up Saturday’s showdown.
LIVESTREAM: Newport Harbor will not be livestreaming the game. If one is made available by the NFHS Network, it will be linked here by Saturday morning (May 21).
2022 CIF STATE REGIONALS: A win on Saturday would give Loyola its 5th CIF State Regional Championship all-time (2009, 2010, 2012, 2017), all under the direction of head coach Michael Boehle ’84. For the full 2022 regional bracket, click here.
