PREVIEW: Loyola won its third-straight Angelus League championship last season and finished as CIF-SS Semifinalists. The Cubs and Spartans have met early in the season for the last two years, with Loyola winning on the road in 2021 and Damien winning at Smith Field in 2022. This year’s rubbermatch will be Loyola’s first game, while Damien will have already played during Week 0, a road game at Yorba Linda in which the Spartans won 31-21.
UNDERCLASSMEN: This year, Loyola will field a sophomore-only team and a freshman-only team to round out the three-level football program. Both squads begin action this Thursday (Aug. 24).
The Class of 2026 sophomores had a breakout first season last year as freshmen, going undefeated at 10-0 and bringing back an exciting and hopeful new energy to Loyola Football. While a number of those players have since been called up to Varsity in 2023, expect a hungry squad of sophomores to compete hard during their 10-game season. Their first game is set for Thursday (Aug. 24) at home at 4PM and will be livestreamed via the NFHS Network here.
This year’s newest Cubs from the Class of 2027 are eager to make their Loyola debuts, gearing up for their first-ever action on the road on Thursday (Aug. 24) at Damien at 4PM. They follow that with another road game at Culver City next Thursday (Aug. 31) before playing their first home game on Sept. 7th. The freshmen have 11 games on this year’s slate, with six of them played at Loyola’s Smith Field.
HISTORY: Loyola’s legendary football program is among California’s all-time best, ranking sixth on the state’s wins list with 674 total victories. The Cubs have one National Championship (1975) to go along with six CIF Division I championships, while 11 Cubs have been recognized as CIF Players of the Year––including current head coach Drew Casani ’91. As of the most recent NFL season, Loyola currently ranks No. 1 amongst all high schools in Southern California with four active alumni on NFL 53-man rosters.
