The Cubs secured their position in the CIF-SS Division IV Finals by defeating the Camarillo Scorpions, 31-14, on Friday, Nov. 22nd. The Cubs had a strong game on both sides of the ball making key offensive plays and limiting Camarillo’s offensive movements. In the first quarter, the Cubs started strong defensively with MLB Steven Arellano ‘20 getting a sack in the first minute and forcing the Scorpions to punt. RB Harrison Allen ‘22 made a 17-yard run setting up Tajh Owens to make a 9-yard touchdown run, putting Loyola up 7-0. With 3 minutes left in the first quarter, the Cubs forced a turnover and took over the ball on the Scorpions’ 15-yard line. TE Brendan Pernecky ‘20 received a 14-yard pass to put the Cubs on the 1-yard line. The pass was followed by a 1-yard touchdown run by Harrison Allen, making the score 14-0. The Cubs’ defense once again forced a punt, and WR Gibson Plumb ‘20 ran the ball for 48 yards. The second quarter started mid-drive for the Cubs and WR Michael Jones ‘20 received a 12 -yard pass to bring the score to 21-0. Camarillo scored a with 6 minutes left in the half, making the score 21-7. The first half ended with the prior score of 21-7.
About 5 minutes into the 3rd quarter, Camarillo scored again making the score 21-14. With 3 minutes left in the third quarter, the Cubs forced and recovered a fumble, culminating in a field goal by Diego Burgos and making the score 24-14. After a botched punt by the Scorpions, Harrison Allen ran in a touchdown with 5 seconds left in the third, the score 31-14. The Cubs relied on their defense in the 4th quarter with the defensive line making key stops and CB Ceyair Wright ‘21 making two interceptions, ending any chance of a Camarillo comeback and securing the Cubs victory. The Cubs will play San Juan Hills in the Division 4 finals, most likely at Loyola on Saturday, November 30th.
