The Cubs were dominant in their second round CIF match at Newbury Park High School Friday night.
Early on Michael Maloney drew a foul by a Newbury defender and is given a PK. Maloney takes full advantage and gets the early goal (1-0). Later on in the first half Maloney gets his second goal of the game off a perfectly placed corner kick by fellow senior Eric Arreolla making the score 2-0.
The Cubs keep their intensity going into the second half. Towards the middle of the half, the Cubs get their third goal thanks to junior striker Jake Rodgers. By shutting down key Newbury players and maintaining a good pace the Cubs were able to shut out Newbury Park while allowing few to no shots on net. Final score: 3-0.
This coming Tuesday the Cubs face Santa Ana High School who they lost to early in December (2-1). But to say the Loyola team in December is the same as it is now would be false. The Cubs have gained momentum and unity on the pitch seven days a week, and while it may be a challenging one, this varsity team looks to Tuesday with tenacity and hunger. Come support your Cubs Tuesday at the Santa Ana Bowl at 3pm. Go CUBS!!
