PREVIEW: Loyola is currently 24-1 on the season and ranked No. 1 in the country in the latest AVCA Boys HS National Poll. They ride a 19-match winning streak into the first pool play game against Beckman (27-4), who is ranked No. 6 in the same AVCA National Poll. Last season, Loyola defeated Beckman in the semifinals (also at Leavey Gym) to advance to the CIF Finals.
After a three-week break, the Cubs resumed action this past weekend at the 2023 Mike Cook Varsity Classic hosted by Redondo Union/Mira Costa, going 7-0 and claiming the tourney crown. Though the injury bug has hit a few of Loyola's starters, expect a closely-contested matchup on Wednesday at Leavey Gym.
CIF PLAYOFFS: In a new postseason format, top overall seed Loyola will host pool play games against the No. 5 (Beckman), No. 8 (Edison on Tues, May 2 at 6PM), and No. 4 (Corona del Mar on Sat, May 6 at 6PM) seeds at Leavey Gym. The winner of the pool plays the winner of the other pool (seeds 2/3/6/7) in the CIF Finals on May 13th.
