Loyola Legend Steve Grady '63 Inducted to California High School Football Hall of Fame

The only man in CA prep football history to be named State Player of the Year and Coach of the Year is one of five who will be inducted to the Hall of Fame.

PASADENA, CA – One of the all-time great high school football coaches in California will be honored as such, as former Loyola Football head coach and alum Steve Grady '63 earned his place in the California HS Football Hall of Fame – as announced by the Rose Bowl Legacy foundation on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Grady – the only man in California prep football history to be named State Player of the Year (1962) and State Coach of the Year (2003) – is one of five coaches who will be honored as part of the second-ever class to the Hall of Fame, which is located at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena.

As a student-athlete at Loyola, Grady was a three-year starter, an All-American Catholic League linebacker in 1961 and an All-American single-wing tailback that led the Cubs to the 1962 CIF AAAA Championship – the school's first-ever CIF football title. That season (his senior season) Grady was also named the State Player of the Year after scoring 217 points for the undefeated (12-0) Cubs. He rushed for 35 touchdowns, led the state in rushing with 2,097 yards (6.6 yards per carry), and passed for 738 yards and 10 touchdowns, He then went on to play both football and baseball at USC, where he won a national championship in 1967 under legendary Trojan head coach John McKay as a running back. Grady was later drafted by the NFL's Denver Broncos.

As head coach of the Cubs for nearly 30 years (1976-2004), Grady amassed an overall record of 269-77-6 (77.3%) and guided Loyola to two CIF Division I titles (1990, 2003) and four additional CIF Division I Finals appearances (1992, 1995, 1996, 2000). From 1988-2004, Grady's Loyola teams reached the CIF Division I semifinals or finals a total of 11 times. After the 2003 CIF Division I championship victory over Long Beach Poly, he earned his first State Coach of the Year honor. Having coached over 1,100 Cubs during his tenure, Grady had 85 of them earn All-CIF distinction including current program head coach, Drew Casani '91. Grady was later inducted to the CIF Southern Section Hall of Fame in 2016, while his No. 36 jersey was also retired by Loyola High School's Athletic Department.

Grady and the 2024 California HS Football Hall of Fame Class will be honored on Saturday, November 30th during the UCLA vs Fresno State football game at Rose Bowl Stadium. Congratulations to a living Loyola legend!
